4th roas post

Summary
For my last post I read through pages 162-204 , which was to the end of the book. The end of the book gave me a better understanding of Susanna as a person and I finally got a answer to why the book was called " Girl Interrupted". Through these pages Susanna speaks of her life after she had left the hospital and all her thoughts. She thought alot about normal topics and why she had the mentality she did. Susanna spends alot of time thinknig to herself and about how she is crazy. She is the type of person that could thing she is alright but she knows deep inside shes going cucu-bananas. Susanna thinks about herself most of the time and tried to understand life in her own way. Getting closer to the end I saw how she doesnt want to have kids or none of that after bumpingi nto Lisa. I foudn that her motivation on planning not to have kids is because maybe shes thinking of her life and how thats affecting her. At the end when shes at a painting galleria with her boyfriend there was one called Girl Interrupted which had the same things she did and things she went through. As she saw this she cried becuase that is what she is , a girl who was interrupted and in her world is being misunderstood.

Quotation
The quotation that hit me the most and stood out to me was at the end of the book. This part leaves you with somethign to think about and brings up many comments and arguments. At the end of the book it was said, " The girl at her music sitsi n another sort of light fitful, overcast light of life, by which we see ourselves and others only imperfectly, and seldom" (Kaysen 204).

Reaction
My reaction to this quote is that this whole book was like To Kill A Mockingbird. The book leaves you wondering of where the title came fro mand leads to a final scene that brings the explanation to msot of your questions. In this book Girl Interrupted was a painting of a girl in her music which describes Susanna and htish er hard when she sees it becuase it reminds her of herself. The book led on to this scence since the book was a flashback and at the end it was a normal day for her until it led to the end where she saw this and gave her final piece of her though. This quotaton tells us how the girl is lost and sees herself alone in the future. I agree with this bok because it goes perfectly with Susanna and it was a good way to end the story .

* thanks Mr.Doreian for the reccomendation on the book, I loved it.

ROAR POST

Summary
In my roar book I read through pages 114-158, which is close to the end of the book. The book at this point talks about the hospital and also her life after she left. Susanna was giving us all this time a flashback of how it was for her in McLean Hospital and their actions.Throughout these pages in the beginning she told us more about how was the hospital. She also went through a rough stage , which showed me she is crazy. She thought she didn't have bones so she bit herself until se saw blood. Then she questioned over and over if she had any bones. The nurse Valerie and Georgina told her she did but that wasn't so convincing. This part showed me how she does need help because she keeps nhaving moments of where she's not thinking at all . Then further in my reading , I noticed how it was after she left and her life was out of place. She was married but was unemployed and wasn't able to get a drivers licence. She couldn't because she was viewed as a "loony bird" and because as soon as she said where she use to be everyone treats her different. On top of treating her different they question her as is she was a retard which aggravates her in many levels.

Quotation
" As long as we were willing to be upset, we didn't have to get jobs or go to school. Wecould weasel out of anything except eating and taking our medication"(pg 114).

Reaction
My reaction to this quotation is that these girls are giving me the impression that the hospital is a joke. As if that place was to have them do as they please since the nurses do as they say. Knowing this makes me wonder if they ever want to move past this stage and be able to live life as they please. But as if now the girls just make me think they're even more crazy and need more help. Because I know that, I would despice being watched, token care of and all of that. In life you get to a point where you want to be able to count on yourself and independent. Although these girls have a way different mentality and with that mentality they won't make it through in life

3rd ROAR POST

Summary
In my next section for reading I only read from pages 89-111 because I realized i have only 100 pages left so i need to distribute the amount so i get to do enough reading for my last 2 posts. In these pages I got to learn more about the actual nurses in the McLean Hospital that the girls have been in. There consist of many nurses but 2 I've been introduced to is Valerie and Mrs.McWeeny. Valerie is favored more by the ladies because shes a little better to them because they could get away with trying to talk trash about Mrs. McWeeny. Mrs.McWeeny doesn't get along with Valerie and by this the girls saw this as a advantage. Even by this the girls still hated all of them since they wanted everything to go their way when they clearly know isn't like that. For example Lisa through out this section wanted a nurse to open her window and she kept threatening to call her lawyer. She said this as she yelled and was demanding to have her window open, she wasn't even asking nicely. These girls expect to have the nurses lay them hand in foot whenever they want when they are totally incorrect. After this for the rest of the section we just got to see more of what was going through Susanna head and more of her personal opinions.
Quotation

These thoughts have no meaning, They are idiot mantras that exist in prearranged cycle: I'm no good, I'm the Angel of Death, I'm stupid, I cant do anything. Thinking the first thought triggers the whole circuit. Its like the flu: first a sore throat, then, inevitably, a stuffy nose and a cough"(Kaysen 93).
Reaction
While reading this quote I realized how Susanna is the type of person to sit there and think to herself. This is one of the moments she is giving her own opinion and gives me a opportunity to see how she feels about herself. She doesn't have high hopes for herself and has a very low self esteem. She knows how things work because she was right when she said after you have a thought on your mind it triggers you by staying there. Although her thoughts are making her seem like a retarded, evil person when I don't believe that's really her. I believe she is smarter then what she appears, but what she's exposed to in front of her is making her make the wrong decisions. I don't see her improving because first it starts mentally then physically but her mental image of herself isn't going to help her. The thoughts that shes having like this one is just going to lead her to the wrong path. Seeing her take this path hurts me because I think of actual people like her he are capable of moving forward but they wont let themselves.

Summary.
In my ROAR book I read from pages 49 to 88 , which provided me with alot of information. Susanna showed me in the story how she can be normal and crazy at the same time by her actions. Through out this part I read flashbacks and sometimes she thought right and i questioned why she was there , if she started learning. Although what I was thinking faded away as she revealed that she gave blow jobs and didn't seem to care. She shared out her business with everyone and had this weird mentality. Her mentality told me how she switches night and day , she becomes frustrated with parents and she volunteer to go to the McLean hospital.By the evidence I see how crazy she really is since she signed herself up without knowing anything. Susanna is the type of person who knows the right things at time, but there's time she thinks without her brain. In this part of the book also I got to see how the other characters become desperate for sexual interaction. The girls discuss how they'll share boys, the nasty things they'll do, and also how they act out when their in public. IN addition to all of this we were introduced to a character names Lisa Cody. Lisa acted just like the other Lisa and was as crazy as the rest of the girls so she fit in quick. I don't see any hope in them but Susanna but with all these influences surrounding her, I doubt she'll make it out.
Quotation.
" I had a character disorder. When I got my diagnosis it didn't sound serious, but after a while it sounded more ominous than other people's. I imagined my character as a plate or shirt that had been manufactured incorrectly and was therefor useless" ( Kaysen 74).
Reaction.
My reaction to this quote was surprised and I thought of people that go threw the same thing Susanna goes through. I was surprised because I found it akward how she explained her problem like a disorder, even though it was true. She was beating behind the bush or anythign, she simply admit her problem and was ok with it. Usually the patient avoids the truth and acts af is everything is ok with her , when its not like that. I thought of how i nthis world there are people like her that need help, butI feel liek hse doesnt need it as much. I feel like this becuase she knows better when she wants to, but theres days she simply acts diffrent. When shes alone shes a whole diffrent person but when shesi n front of the other girls, it seems as if she puts an act.

I apologize for the writing , I have no clue why it appears to be such a big size. I tried a few times to fix it but nothing seems to work.

My Independent Reading Book - Rosa*

Summary
For my outside reading choice i selected the book " Girl Interrupted" by Susanna Kaysen that's based on a true story of a girl who lived right here in Boston, Ma. Each character goes through a different mental problem in which they're trying to improve by attending a a sort of home in which they're bring treated and watched. There are many girls involved in this story like Lisa, Polly, Daisy, Martians Girlfriend, the nurses, and Daisy's father. All these girls have gone through things and even tried suicide to why they stand where they are now. For example Polly set herself on fire and now her skin is disgusting , is the colors pink & brown, and she absolutely hates how she looks. In the past pages they are all interacting, watching TV together, gossiping and so forth. So far I believe that most of the girls will kill themselves by the end by their intolerant behavior and actions. The girls don't see how what they do is affecting their life and find they're horrible thoughts. For instance, there's a chapter talking about suicide and ho they feel if you don't practice, pretend, and think about it enough you wont do it. Its as if they find death pleasant and they don't see it as the end to their life. The girls need more help then what they have now, and they need it soon before the girls end up killing themselves or each other.
Quotation
Throughout these pages Susanna had many suicidal thoughts that were very dangerous. For example, " Suicide is a form of murder-premeditated murder. It isn't something you do the first time you think of doing it. It takes getting use to. And you need the means, the opportunity, the motive. A successful suicide demands good organization and a cool head, both of which are usually incompatible with the suicidal state of mind" (Kaysen 45).
Reaction
My reaction to the quote was that i felt scared, terrified, bad and sympathy. I came upon all these feelings by the thoughts that ran threw my head as I read. I thought about all the things that the girls may be thinking of doing to themselves, the mentality of the girls, and how they don't appreciate life. I saw all of this because its sad to see such young girls thinking this way and wanting to hurt themselves. It just doesn't make sence to me because I would never think the way they do. In addition to that, I felt scared because suicidal thoughts are creepy, to think of hurting yourself and things like that isn't something to be happy about.
