Quotation
"I'll get back to work;after all, that was my life"(Tolstoy 37).
Reaction
My reaction when reading this part at the begining of my second section made me think to myself for a minute. I belive that Ian should have been a less work addict, and taken time for himself and his wife.Ivan is one of those mans who may loose evberything ibn life by only focusiing on work, which is not a bad thing but it is not your life. He in fact knows his health issues and still manages to go to work and pay less attention to it. Health always comes before anything, and trust me ; I've been there. He should prioritize his time as much as he can since it is already known that he will die. Ivan I believe dies and is one of those mans who put their all into work but not into the other important things in life. Me, personally being in a position as ivan besides the whole death part learned that I need to prioritize. Before I use to do many things that I gave up, spending alot of time with friends, and figured out what's important in my life. I changed because i knew that the way I was makign desicions was not the best way and it will just hurt me more if i was to continue. * Tolstoy putting those words in Ivan's mouth made me imagine the type of characted he tried to build in Ivan.

Summary
Now after reading section 6 , I somewhat understand a little better then i did before. Now The book is seventeen years later , as the book talks more about Ivan. I assume the book is about finding out how Ivan died since its getting pretty intense as they talk about how Ivan is begining to get sick. As reading i can say I donot think Ivan is such a good person since to be he seems greedy and thinks he knows it all. I dont believe his wife is so nice as she begings to talk about him and wish him to die, One thing can be if you start to dislike him, but the consideration of him being a dead man is something way diffrent. Then I come to see more how Ivan is all about his job, and playing bridge for the most part. Ivan doesnt take manythings as serious as he should, and that is dangerous. A normal person would be aggravated with diffrent results of doctors and be worried, but that is not ivan. He instead sets his mind that he will be ok, without knowing exacly what is going on in reality.
* Prediction: Ivan is going to die, and it will probably be from a illness, he doesnt become aware of, because of his lack of care. Him and his wife will have some sort of dispute and hate eachother even more, since they are already on that path.
Quotation
This quote really made me have a self connection since I understand what Ivan Ilyich is going threw."Well who knows,"he said. "Maybe it really is nothing much"(Tolstoy 28).
Reaction
My reaction to this quote is ismply a " i knoe what you mean" face. I am the type of person who can get sick and think it is nothing big without actually knowing. To be more specific, recently I wasnt feeling good, and a trip to the doctors made me be aware that it wasnt just a stomach ace, and headaces all along. I realized it was more serious that it made me get ill very oftenly. I still don't believe it may be as far of a situation as my doctor says but I am still not sure of what is going on. I usually never think anything is a big deal since I have alot going on in my life, like Ivan. That can probably be why Ivan doesn think anything big is going on with him, since he is more worried obn other important things, as he says,Therefor, I understand Ivan and I can connect to why he thinks it isnt a big deal.

Summary
The book I began to read now is The Death of Ivan Ilyich, a story that has me askign many questions. The book stares in imidiece race as it starts at the end, I believe. The book is pretty much backwards as it starts by stating the death of Ivan Ilyich , who was very well known. He was admired by many and was a very good man. He had a very close friend who is Peter. Peter in the book is in the just as everyone is sort of talking about the death, the outcome, and what will be done in the future. As this is happening his wife was introduced, Praskovya Fedorovna who is now a widow. Through out the church service she talks to him alone as she tries to get money for the funeral. Then also thought the second section the book talked about the life of Ivan Ilyich. He was a very hardworking man who only wanted the best for his family. Like most people at that time period, he was part of the justice people in court, he was son of a civil war sergeant and his family was pretty successful. Two of his children lived a good life as they had a good future except one who was a failure, and therefor they pretended he was dead. The book in my opinion began really strong, and it is a little confusing to understand. I predict that the book is going ot be an entire case on how Ivan Ilyich died, and what caused hsi death.
What type of last name is Iylich ?
Quotation
"Gentlemen!" he said," Ivan Ilyich is dead"(Tolstoy).
Reaction
My reaction to this was" OMG , hes dead?" . I reacted really shocked because I was nto expecting the book to start off in saying that someone had already died. Then as I read this I tried to kinda figure out what was the point the author was trying to make, or how the book was going to be written. I automatically assumed that the book was going to be all about telling the story in flashback mode since it started with no background. But then I thought of how I was going to have a big role as a reader to figure out whats going on. Specially in this book how the authors writtign style is a little more complex to seem that I am use to.

Summary
Nearing the end of the book they discussed about Leonel , the current president of the Dominican Republic. His background and childhood was discussed and how at first he was loved by the Dominicans. ( Now Leonel is not really liked, and people want him to be replaced. When I went for vacation my aunt was telling me how he is doing nothing and watching them fall apart). In addition the book talked about how even though they had their differences they managed to get along better at one point . They celebrated by having carnivals, and "patronales" which is the name of get togethers held in Dominican Republic. They have a few days of fun in which they dance, eat and forget all the bad things. They settled their differences by combining together, despite how much they pretty much hated eachother.Although after this event everything goes back to normal . The ending wasnt really what I expected but this is pretty much it.

Reaction
The reaction I had to this part was a big smile on my face becuase finally the haitians and dominicans are looking past their diffrences. I honestly think it is stupid that the dominicans and haitians cna have so many problems when they are basicly neighboors. They make the problems get bigger instead of trying to actually fix them. The only time you;d see them blending in together would be during the carbnivals thta only lasted one day.
I believe that if the dominicans and haitians stop fighting then it would be a better enviroment for both parties.

Summary
Nearing the end of the book up to about the 210's nd 220 , the book is discussing drug dealing. As it is known now and still was throughout the early times, many dominicans are involved in this type of action. It is not only dominicans in the dominican republic but those who migrate to New York , Boston, and other places in theU.S . The book discussed drug dealing in New York which is the same now or even worse. Before as the book explained it was simple but now it is getting a little bigger since now dominicans getdeported back. Many dominicans that take part in this action in the Dominican Republic do it because there are no other jobs available. There arent many jobs available as money is needed so many dominicans are faced with no choice in what to do. The bookalso talked about how many dominicans do go to New York as the place to head to when leaving the country wheater it is illegal or legal. In the United States it is discussed how domincans when being enterd i nthe U.S are nto involved or heard by others because of the factthat they came "straight of the boat". They try to get involved but it is not easy when you are also trying to learn English and learn at the same time. Although in New York dominicans are more involved politicaly since there is supposrt from their own kind.
Quotation
"Dominicans have sent their young men north for a long time. The merengue star Juan Luis Guerra sings, in his hit "Visa para su Sueno"..(Wucker 203)
Reaction
Dominicans all have a dream to be able to come to the united states and build a new begining. The Dominican Republic is filled with people doing nothing since there are barely any jobs. The poverty they are going through is serious that it leads to violence. When I went over the summer to D.R , I seen people begging for food . This was so sad and breaks my heart because most people want to just have a better life. The merengue described in the quote is saying "let me go to te U.S , a better life over there is my dream so I need my visa". Its just sad how all these people who want to do the right thing in having a better life , can't obtain that oppourtunity.

Summary
Throughout these pages I read, the Dominican Republic was going through a good time period with economy as the Haitians did not. Although after a period of time the Dominicans got into a debt because they owed more then millions to the U.S. Around this time the Dominicans had a bad president who used money from the banks for his personal reasons. He did not care for the Dominicans and simply took advantage of them. The Dominicans although got rid of him eventually because of all the mistreatment, but they weren't the only ones. The Haitian cane cutters where getting mistreatment from the Dominicans and the world watched this. In Haiti also they received a bad president who spent a lot of money unnecessarily. He was the son of one of the older presidents time ago who was the same way. He was known as "baby doc" and he wasted more then 3 million dollars in his wedding. As this occurred the Haitians received messages from the pope giving them advice. From here then I learned how both the Haitians and Dominicans experienced their first democratic president. Both did not last very long and in the Haitians then had the next president remain for 12 years later.

Reaction
The dominican debt probably was to get both parts together becuase that ment the dominicans would probably try to get along better with haitians. This might happen so that the dominicans could get otu of debt and better their economy, By this the dominicans would then stop mistreting the cane cutters since theyll might need their help. This would be the time that both nations would actually have to put their diffrences aside. So i do believe it was a international plot to make them work together as one.

Up to page 100 , we got to see more of the views between Haitians and Dominicans and how they felt towards eachother. Trujillo was not liekd at all in D.r therefor he was assasinated, just as people wanted; the land although was lead to complete chaos after. In the west of Haiti they were having disputes with the president Vincent , his attitude lead him to be killed as well. There does exist a small town in the Dominican Republic called Little Haiti. There Haitian merchant and Dominicans converge to trade, sell, and buy things they need. The town harbors get the same bad treatment and racial conflict between Haitians. Crime, poverty, exist alot within that small town in the Dominican Republican. In addition, trust and love exists between the neighbors, Dominican and Haitian since some dont want more chaos going on. The workers from the small town go to work over on the sugar cane farms. But, the farm owners and government were well known for their mistreatment of workers , which is related to slaves during the 19th century. Dominican workers although have a bad side for many Haitians because they take up many jobs that could of been available for them. The government has a love and hate relationship between the Haitians. The dominicans fear of the haitians because they feel as if they are a weight load on the government, they are met with disdain from some Dominicans, and some politicians fear the Haitians could take over the country. Besides all this dominicans dont completly hate Haiti, but they constantly have many issues with eachother based on many other topics.

Reaction
This quotation reminds me of exactly what I saw when I visited Dominican Republic for the summer last year. When I was there I saw many Haitians who encounterd with Dominicans work wise like the book mentioned. This reminded me of a specific time when I went out with my aunt shopping and I stopped at a little stand of Coconut drinks to buy one. The guy was Haitian and spoke to me in Spanish , and i exchanged words with him.He told me about how he is staying at Dominican Republic for a while to get some money and then go back to his family. As soon as I read this I remeberd the man and how nice he was to me.

ROAR POST 1- TERM 4
Summary
The book I am reading for this term is Why the Cocks Fight ? , by Michele Wucker. This book so far up to page 50 has informed me about alot of information. The main focus at first was on cock fighting which are fights among roosters vs. roosters. This is when a man bets another man on roosters and so forth; like gambeling. Although in the Dominican Republic and Haiti this is illegal, they manage to have it happen anyways. In the Dominican Republic this is taken very seriously and if you refuse to pay your bet, you are band for life. The same rules apply in Haiti, the only diffrence is the amount of money bet since Haiti is a little bit more poorer then the Dominican Republic. In adittion to all of thid both Haiti and D.R experienced dictators such as Rafael Trujillo, Buloyer, Lillis and so forth, In this type of goverment roosters were used as an influence in the political parties. In the Dominican Republic there was times where there were dictators thrown out because they were disliked. This happend often in DOminican Republic since they didnt want ot be run by someone they all went against ( not true with Trujillo). In Haiti there was a point where it was split into two goverments by location. The North had its own governer as so did South until Boyer untified them back. Cock fighting became popular as it became a famous hobbie amoung all the poeple. ALthough in the Dominican Republic it was a sport announced by Trujillo.
FACTS*
-> Dominicans decalred Independence in November 1821
->Dominicans and Haitians protected themselves from European invansions
-> Haitians had to wait a little while before declaring their independence
->May 7th of 1842 there was a earthquake that struck the entire island
-> they both fought against foreigners
Quotation
"They say that women and roosters have something in common. One day they will fail you. Any rooster, even the best one, will loose one day"(Wucker 24).
Reaction
My reaction when reading this is that its just like reality. In reality you are bound to loose at some point in your life, you cant always win. No matter how much you may be the best at everything, there will be that one thing where you are not going to be the best at. Although I found the first sentence a litle sexting against women. I found it sexting because its prety much trying t infer that women are bound to loose but not men and thats not right. I feel like that comment did not have to be made and it shouldnt have been said towards women.
Knowledge I have about Dominicans is that often they feel that women are loosers in general since when I was in Dominican Republic for the summer, I saw it. I observed men get payed more the women in the same job and just unfairness amoung both sexes.

5th ROAR post
Characters minimized
In the film Holly, Len Fernan, the mom, Bruian, Samuel, Ruanna, Clarissa, Ray and Ruth were more minimized in the film. The film focused mostly on the father and Susie watching the earth from her Heaven. The character that was focused alot with Susie was Lindsey and Jack. Jack in the film was seen in addition to Lindsey as the person who never let go. lindsey in the film showed more affection for her sister that was not described that much in the book.
Characters emphazised
Jack, Lindsey, and Mr.Harvey were emphazised alot i nthe film more then anythign else. Jack was demonstrated as the main character that took part in the reason why the end of the movie was hwo it was. Jack didnt let the investigation go as everyone else gave up. Lindsey like her father was very observative and was willign to do anything to find out what happend to her sister. She was emphazised alot by how her and her sister were with eachother. Mr.Harvey and his life was shown alot in the film asw it was not so much in the book.
Camera POV
The point of view in the film shown the most was 1st person since it was all Susie's thougths in her head and what was seen through her eyes. In the begining there was 3rd person pov because she was alive so it was pretty much someone else sayign her stories. Mosto f the film was from SUsies point of view and how she felt about the whole situation.
Reoccuring Images
Images that happend alot in the film was blank when the settign or part of the movie changed. Susie crying, Mr.Harvey standing around; most of the film was diffrent images of Susies world and what was happening after she died.
Use of Music & Sound Effect
In the film there was music at the end, only when Susie first enterd the other world, and when she enterd the earth in Ruth's body. The film didnt have many music moments as most of them actually do but I still liked it. Just like many other films this film used soudn effects when somethign exciting or itnerestign was occuring. The sound effects in this film came alot when there was a important scene happening. For example in the film when Lindsey sneeaked into mr.Harveys hosue there was liek a expense type soudn that went off.
One Shot
A shot that caught my attention completely was when Lindsey was puttingthe piece of floor down slowly as Mr.Harvey felt her in the house. The extreme close up shot of Lindsey's fingers was incredible as a clock was ticking, and there was liek a quick flashback to Mr.Harvey waiting for the little tiny noise she made. This scene was crazy and had a expense sound that had me more and more excited to see what was going to happen. During this part the film had my attention completely.
* The book is way better & many thigns where changed. In addition to this many parts were not even mentioned in the film that where emphasized in the book.

Summary
Now I have finished the entire book and I absolutely love the ending. The book is tellign hte story as years fly and Lindsey even graduated from college. From here the mother has years since she went away from work and left all her children behind. As the father one day suffers of a heart attack she comes back. Once she comes and spends 2 days with Jack in the hospital they get all the love back and have a cute moment where they cry and everything. As this is going on Susie after all these years still remains warching everything that is happening on earth. Lindsey then on her way home with Samuel, they stop at a little house were they make love in a closet. After this he asks to marry her and she accepts. After this Susie went in Ruth's body and made love with Ray. Ray knew it was her and so did Ruth when they awoken the next day. As they celebrate its starting to be the moment when the family is learning to let go of Susie. Time passes and Lindsey has a girl in which the dad hopes one day he can teach about ship bottles. As the family moves on they all realize that they will never forget her and just remember her by never forgetting who Susie Salmon once was.
Quotation
" You don't notice the dead leaving when they really choose to leave you. You're not meant to. At most you feel them as a whisper or the wave of a whisper undulating you" (Sebold 323).
Reaction
my reaction to this quote said by Susie is that her family didn't let her go until she let go. I feel like her family felt apart because she watched over them and followed them. Her family knew that she still lived in the house therefor they never had a chance to let her go. But after she decided to leave and her family moved on past her death. After the family found themselves again they left Susie in their memory where she always belonged. This quote made me remember about me when my father had to leave me. I made a big scene and didn't want to except the fact that my father wasn't going to be with me every single day. Although I learned to let go and realize I am talk to him on the phone at least , even though it wont be in person.

3rd ROAR POST
Summary
Up to chapter 17 so many things are happening and the true colors are coming out. Susie remains watching everything that happens on earth. She becomes hurt as it is revealed that Mr.Harvey has murdered many other people. He always manages to get out of it and have no trace on him, which is really frustrating. Lindsey ,Grandma Lynn and the mom see why Jack suspects on Mr.Harvey so much. Grandma notices something weird and feels as if he was the man responsible. As all this goes on Lindsey is growing up on her own with the help of her father. She is entering the stage of shaving and her mother seems to not be involved. Her mother is more worried about Len, she is forgetting about her family. Jack is here worrying about Mr.Harvey, while Lindsey is growing up, Buckley is getting special treatment and the mom is on her other stuff. The whole family is all over the place and then Lindsey decided to sneak into the house. She broke in and found an image sketched in the place she was killed. As she left, Mr.Harvey saw her and the police got involved and everything. The police although found him unguilty, and Mr.Harvey made him self sound harmless by him deciding not to press charges on Lindsey. He now is leaving place to place and is lucky while it lasts because now they are getting on to him. he is loosing luck to the point where they found her charm bracelet, they even found some of his prints but theres still not enough.
Quotation
"I felt the kisses as they came down my mother's neck and onto her chest, like the small, light feet of mice, and like the flower petals falling that they were. Ruinous and marvelous all at once. They were whispers calling her away from me and from her family and from her grief. She followed with her body" (Sebold).
Reaction
When reading this quote i thought of Mothers out there just like her. There are women out there just like her who loose themselves after something big impact their life. I'm not saying she is doing right because its wrong but I mean shes lost. She is with the guy who is investigating her daughters death when she should be worrying of her husband. Ever since what happened to her daughter she seems to have forgotten her family. I honestly feel bad for her because what she is doing is unexplainable. Although at the same time its not easy for a mother to know her daughter will be gone forever, and they couldn't even say goodbye.

2nd roar post 3rd term
Summary
This book just keeps getting better and better as I keep reading. Right now I left off reading at page 154 and it’s getting pretty intense. Right now the father is still suspecting on Mr. Harvey but the police just see him as going completely crazy. They have no lead on him so they find it completely pointless to even try and they still have not had anything on her murderer, therefore the police might let go of the case. Susie’s father is just loosing it as he attacked Susie’s friend thinking its Mr. Harvey so Brian (a friend) attacked him with a bat. While he was at the hospital, his house was just a mess. Lindsey always tries to hide her feelings when she clearly knows she’s breaking down inside. She hates the treatment she gets from everyone from Susie’s death. Buckley swore he saw his sister and the death is not really affecting him much. Like it is but since he is a little kid then he is easily forgotten about it at times. The mother as completely changed her character since now she is starting to like the police guy Len. She even got to kiss him while all of this is going on which shows her lack of dedication to her husband and family. Her feelings changed for her husband and everything seemed to change between them ever since her death. Then the book also talks about Susie and how she is in her heaven and its not as perfect as it is. She knows theres a better place but she just wants to jump in to the earth and help everyone out. This book is getting intense but I get frustrated because her father knows its Nr.Harvey whose responsible but no one believes him.
Quotation
"And I watched that flat red mouth move across an invisible line to her and slowly kissed him on the mouth"( Sebold 148 ) .
Reaction
My reaction to this qoute is a unbelievable face. I can't believe how her mother is forgetting everything. She is not being a good wife in supporting her husband. She is having a affair while she is not really spending time with her family and trying to be understanding. This is a tough situation, it really is in reality. But she neeeds to try to make things work because she is still alive. She neeeds to be the women of the house and be there for her family. Right now is the time were they need to be the closets as a family and try to deal with the fact that susie is gone forever.

1st ROAR POST - term 3
Summary
My ROAR selection for term 3 is Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I absolutely love the book and
wish I could read it forever. Right now I read up until page 74 and so much has happened that its crazy. The first chapter she was raped by her neighbor Mr.Harvey who killed her right after by chopping her into pieces. After she dies she goes to her heaven where she looks to earth and sees everything that's going on. Her father is hurt the most because he shared many memories with her and he just doesn't want to face the fact that shes dead. Her mom and sister are hurt as well but its not stressed as much as the father. She is happy in heaven but misses everything about her lfie and what gave it meaning to her. Now in the book the police is stil ltrying to work on her case but there are no leads or anything. The father suspects on Mr.Harvey but the police find that theres no reason to think that so now im just goign to keep reading and find out whats goign to happen next.
Quotation
"He took the hat from my mouth.
"Tell me you love me," he said.
Gently, I did.
The end came anyways"( Sebold 15).
Reaction
I have no words to describe the feeling this part of the book gave me. I felt so bad and useless because I couldn't do anything about it. I know its only a book but she is not the only one who has been raped before in this mean cold world. I really get mad when I start to think how there are actually sick people like this, who do this too young innocent girls. She was so innocent and was just being a nice neighbor to him but he decided that he wanted to force it. Once I read that last line, I couldn't believe he killed her right after. In those few seconds I was thinking to myself how I should be happy that I'm alive and nothing like that has ever happened to me.
